Airlines in need of help are still cool to idea of federal ownership stake

The head of the advocacy group representing Canada’s largest airlines says federal ownership in the sector isn’t the right way to fix the industry’s COVID-induced woes.

Travel restrictions and consumer fears of catching the virus have reduced air travel by about 90 per cent, leading airlines to drastically cut service and lay off thousands of workers.

The collapse, and a lack of direct support from the federal government to date, prompted aviation workers to rally on Parliament Hill on Tuesday to urge Ottawa to craft a plan to safely reopen air travel and get employees back to work.
